Experimental Drawing, Colette Whitington

Experimental drawing

This CPD session aims to explore the value and diversity of drawing; rediscovering mark making techniques to describe sound and actions. It introduces artists working with innovative drawing practices from the 1930’s to the present day. From scratching on celluloid film, to making mechanical drawing machines through to using digital and sound technology as a drawing aid.

The practical tasks featured ask the viewer to draw along to a musical score, considering the marks they make carefully to record the different melodies, change in pace and instruments heard. Then it moves on to an exercise attempting to document the experience of hands knitting, through drawing. The drawing tasks are designed to broaden our knowledge of drawing as a process to record, describe, experience, collaborate and to get lost in.

We hope it gives you plenty of inspiration, and if you do any of the exercises, we’d love to see what you create!
